Integrating a wide range of disciplines to study the cybersecurity problem, UMD has world class researchers across a range of subject domains who study the behavioral, economic, policy, computing, and technical challenges facing individuals and organizations.
UMD is among the top research universities in the nation, including in particular top ranked departments in computer science, information studies, and electrical and computer engineering. The National Security Agency designated UMD as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Research. UMD was also named an intelligence community Center of Academic Excellence by the Department of Homeland Security.
UMD maintains deep expertise in the computational, mathematical, social, and technical foundations of cybersecurity. In particular, UMD works in vital areas such as block chain technologies, big data analytics, machine learning in the context of cybersecurity, systems and network security, systems and organizational risk assessment, and supply chain security.

The Maryland Cybersecurity Center (MC2)
Engages in cybersecurity research, education, and outreach. MC2 is made up of faculty, researchers, and students from across UMD.
Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL)
Developed an innovative cyber aptitude test for the U.S. military that will provide an early prediction of which candidates are likely to be successful in cyber training and cybersecurity jobs.
The Center for Health Information and Decision Systems (CHIDS)
Works in collaboration with industry, clinical, and government partners to develop solutions to the challenges surrounding the design, adoption, and integration of information technologies into the healthcare system.
The Center for International and Security Studies at Maryland (CISSM)
Focuses on assisting policymakers in minimizing the most serious forms of cyber-attack without hindering beneficial uses of IT.
The Center for Public Policy and Private Enterprise (CPPPE)
Deploys critical cybersecurity risk management solutions. Facilitates global dialogue on cyber risk in economy and national security.
Joint Center for Quantum Information and Computer Science (QuICS)
Advances research and education in quantum computer science and quantum information theory.
Cybersecurity Economics Education and Research (CEER) Group
Consists of a group of individuals affiliated with UMD who have common education and research interests in accounting and economic aspects of cybersecurity.
National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START)
A Department of Homeland Security facility at UMD that works with social scientists from institutions on issues such as cyber-attacks.
Supply Chain Management Center
Conducts research and education designed to further the discipline of supply chain management. Operates under a single strategic vision for supply chain management: the collaborative, real-time, end-to- end, risk-tolerant supply chain.
